Potomac State Baseball 2024 Player Diary Week 13

Welcome to the 2024 Potomac State Baseball player diary homepage. This season, Sophomores Ben McDougal (Bridgeport High School / Bridgeport, WV), and Kris Sutton (Cobb County High School / Calhoun, GA) will take the lead on the Potomac State Baseball Player Diary.

Welcome back Catamount Nation to this week’s addition to the Potomac State Baseball Player Diary. This week we endured an awful lot of horrible weather. Plenty of places around the area were hit with massive flooding that seemed to have no end. While we didn’t find ourselves in those extremes, the weather was still poor on our end. The field had to remain covered for most of the week and finding ways to practice outside were difficult. We did, however, still see a lot of work put in thanks to the conveniency of our indoor hitting facility.

As I have mentioned before in previous diary entries, the team loves competing. Whether that is on the field in a baseball game or simply amongst the team in a friendly game. This week, a bunch of the guys wanted to see where their talents would fall as field goal kickers. We put together a field goal competition in our indoor facility in a bracket style tournament to find ourselves a champion. Some of the guys held their own and were able to really show off their skills while others... not so much. Long story short, we found our champion in sophomore catcher, Aidan Milton (Hedgesville, WV).

Then, the biggest highlight of our week had to be the solar eclipse. Along with the rest of the world, the entire team was fascinated with the spectacle. It’s not very often that you get to see the moon cover the earth in the middle of the day. In fact, the last solar eclipse that happen was in 2017 and the next one supposedly isn’t expected until the year 2045. In Keyser, the sun was around 90% covered at one point. This also just seemed to happen around the same time we were gathering for practice. The sky got so dark that at one point, the coaches were debating on delaying practice until it was bright enough again. Thankfully, we were still able to get our practice in on time.

Finally, as for this week's games. The weather finally started to clear up enough for us to still get two games in on Sunday against CCBC Catonsville. We went 1-1 on the week with game one getting away from us and battling back to get a victory in game 2. Two stellar pitching performances carried us through the weekend with Cooper Polcovich (Auburn, NY) once again proving to be reliable arm on the mound after going 5.1 innings on the mound, only giving up 2 earned runs. As for our game 2 starter, Caden Goodwin (Marietta, OH) dominated giving us everything he had in a complete game effort, with only giving up 1 run.
