Welcome back Catamount faithful to another week of the Potomac State Baseball player diary. As the year winds down and playoffs approach, the Catamounts took on three teams this week. Two days on the road and the final games at Golden Park this year. Following the games this week we had our first ever CESPY’S award ceremony with a couple of the boys taking some awards home!
Game one at Seton Hill was a pitching duel ending in a 1-0. Xander Meckley collected his fifth win of the season and Avery Heiple collected the save. Game two was a shootout ending in a 9-8 loss with Seton Hill having some timely hits to come out on top. Heading into the weekend, we headed out to Garrett College in Maryland to play a double header. Balls were flying in game one with the boys collecting 4 home runs including 2 from freshman Hayden Baldwin! Rob Kelley threw a complete game striking out 6 in his performance. Game two Anthony Swenda hit his 2nd and 3rd homeruns of the day, but we unfortunately fell short 13-11.
Looking to bounce back against a big opponent, the Catamounts got ready to face off against a regional opponent… Hagerstown Community College. With the region 20 Tournament quickly approaching, facing off against one of our opponents was great to get us ready for the big dance. Not only did we walk away with two wins, but we walked away on our last games at Golden Park with two wins. Some of us have been here for one year, others have been here for three. For many of us, it was our last day stepping foot between the lines at Golden Park… pictures were taken, and a lot was taken in after the game. Everyone seemed to stick around a little longer and take it in just a bit more than usual. Although our home games have come to an end, there is still business to be taken care of this year.
The Potomac State athletic department hosted a CESPY’S award ceremony highlighting the most deserving athletes wrapping up the 2021-2022 season. This year our athletic director, Amanda Larkin, planned the special night for all the athletes to be rewarded with a nice ceremony at the end of the year. Highlighting all the hard work from the players, coaches, and administrators that have helped the Catamounts excel year in and year out. Two of our boys won, including Trevor Thomas, who received the Catamount Culture award and Anthony Swenda who received athlete of the year! I asked Trevor what it means to him to receive this award and he told me “You know at first, I was not exactly sure what the Catamount Culture award meant at first but once they told me about it, I was obviously excited. Winning an award that talks about dedication and impact on the culture means a lot to me especially since we come from a program with such a long history of success.”
I then talked to Anthony Swenda and asked him the same thing and he responded with “It means a lot to have received this award obviously with it being the first year of us doing the CESPY’S. The athletic department put together a really nice night for all of the athletes and I am just appreciative to have been nominated and to have received it!”
Thank you all for being a part of our team and checking in weekly to the Potomac State baseball player diaries. With time running shorter we have enjoyed each and every week together and cannot wait for the rest of the season to unfold. Make sure to check out this week's video as Benny covers the ins and outs of the week. See you all next week!
