Catonsville, MD- Avery Heiple struck out twelve Catonsville hitters in five innings of work to lead Potomac State to an 8-1 win on Saturday.
The southpaw struck out 12 of the 15 outs he recorded to pick up the win and improve to 2-0 on the season. He allowed just one run and two hits. MacHugh Messier worked the final two scoreless innings for the Catamounts.
Potomac State jumped out to a quick lead with five runs in the opening frame. Zack Whitacre doubled to open the game. He moved to third on a balk and scored on a single from Dale Houser. Graham Brown then singled and one out later Devon Neal reached on an infield hit. The inning was capped by Josh Hoffman's three-run home run. Hoffman finished with two hits including a triple.
Whitacre had three hits, two doubles and a single. In all the Catamounts banged out eleven hits on the day.
Game 2 was canceled by the CCBC Catonsville training staff and athletic department due to Covid-19 protocol.
Potomac State, now 5-2 will play again on Monday when they travel to Clarksburg, WV for a pair of games with Salem University.
