Tourney set to begin on Saturday

WVU Potomac State College will play host to the NJCAA Region XX Division I Baseball Tournament this weekend at Golden Park on the school's campus. The Region XX Baseball committee updated the tournament schedule Wednesday night. The Catamounts will be hosting Harford Community College and Hagerstown Community College in a three team, double elimination tournament. The three teams will be battling for a spot in the NJCAA Eastern District Tournament and a chance to earn a trip to the NJCAA World Series in Colorado.
Potomac State is the number 2 seed in the tourney and will host 3 rd seeded Hagerstown in the tournament opener Saturday, May 4 th at 11:00 AM. The Game #1 winner will face number one seed Harford in a 2:00 PM contest on Saturday afternoon and the loser will wait to play the Game #2 loser in an elimination game on Sunday, May 5 th at Noon. On Sunday afternoon the Winners of Games 2 and 3 will face off at 3:00 PM. If necessary, a final game will be played Monday, May 6th at Noon.
Coach Doug Little's Catamount team enters the tournament at 29 – 9 and armed with offensive punch. They are ranked ninth in the nation in batting average, hitting .352 as a unit, and 15 th in the nation in slugging percentage at .592. Potomac State swept the season series against Hagerstown 2 – 0, winning 11 - 3 in Keyser and 15 – 0 on the road. The Catamounts weren't as successful against Harford CC this season, losing 11 – 0 in Bell Air before drawing a tough 6 – 2 loss at home after surrendering four runs in the top of the ninth. Harford and Hagerstown split a doubleheader in mid-March at Hagerstown, the home team Hawks won the first game 9 – 8 with Harford having the upper hand in the second game, 14 – 5.
In recent tournament history Harford has cemented itself as the team to beat. The Fighting Owls will be seeking an impressive 4 th straight Region XX Championship, having won the crown in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Additionally, they captured titles in 2014 and 2012 for a dynastic run of five Region XX Championships in seven years. Potomac State College last won the Region XX title in 2015.
