Catamounts improve times in large field of competition

Catamounts improve times in large field of competition

September 9, 2023

WVU Potomac State Cross Country teams traveled to Bethany, West Virginia for the Bethany Invitational.  In a very large field of runners, the Catamounts were the only NJCAA intistution.  All other schools were NAIA or NCAA 4-year schools.  Depsite the large field and high level of competition, the Catamounts performed well and many set personal PRs.  Several ran faster times this week on a longer course, proving that the Keyser hills are providing an excellent training ground for collegiate training.

On the women's side the field hosted 172 runners total.  The top Catamount runners didn't change much from the week before, with the returning Amtower duo followed by Alex Kile leading the way for the team and helping them finish 16th out of 20 teams.  Arrisyn Amtower finished in 42nd place with a time of 25:48.6 with her twin sister Minka Amtower crossing the line less than a minute behind at 26.42.5.  Alex Kile, Leah McKenzie, Hannah Hardy, Averi Everline, and Alexa VanMeter filled the 7 scoring spots for the Catamounts.  Sarah Lasko also ran for the Catamounts, improving her mile average by 30 seconds.

The men's side saw an even larger field of 190 runners but again the Catamounts improved desite the crowded course and high competition.  Griffin Paugh was the top finisher for the Catamounts again this week, finishing in 98th place and a time of 29:41.4.  He was followed up by Will Haberlein, Heath Knight, Isaiah Wharton, and Jaxen Ratcliff respectfully.  As was the same for the women, the men also saw mile averages decrease this week even with a much longer course.
