Garrett College outmuscles Potomac State, 61-57

Keyser, W.Va. – The Garrett Lakers played a physically aggressive game and held off the host Catamounts to earn a 61-57 win in Region 20 Division II action Monday night at Lough Gymnasium.

The Lakers collected 19 offensive rebounds and forced 18 Potomac State turnovers. Garrett turned the extra possessions into 11 more field goal attempts (70-59) than Potomac State. The extra shot attempts would prove to be the difference.

The teams traded blows evenly in the first half. Makenna Douthitt paced Potomac State with 8 first half points while Josias Mickens and Aliyah Tucker each scored 8 for Garrett.

PSC held a 14-10 advantage after the first quarter and a 25-23 halftime lead.

The Lakers collected 12 offensive rebounds in the first half.

In the third quarter, Garrett forced the Catamounts into committing 7 turnovers. The turnovers fueled an 18-8 scoring advantage, and the Lakers held a 41-33 lead entering the final quarter.

Potomac State would cut the Garrett lead to 53-52 with just over a minute to play behind Alexis Yanosky's scoring, 9 fourth quarter points, and Douthitt's rebounding, 7 fourth quarter rebounds. The Lakers, however, never surrendered the lead and closed out the win, 61-57.

Garrett's Mickens led all scorers with 17 points. Kelsey O'Neal paced Potomac State with 15 points and added 9 rebounds. Yanosky and Douthitt turned in a pair of double-doubles for the second straight game. Yanosky had 14 points and 11 rebounds while Douthitt had 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Catamounts are now 12-4 on the season. Their next game is Saturday, Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. at the Community College of Allegheny County.
