Softball opens their season 3-1 in Martinsville

The Potomac State Softball Team opened up their season with 3 wins and 1 loss in Martinsville, VA.  

Game one they faced off against Patrick & Henry.  The Patriots had been ranked as high as 8th in NJCAA DIII during the 2023 season.  The Catamounts would fall 3-8 with Charity Wolfe getting the start in the circle.  Wolfe would pitch all seven innings, allowing 13 hits, four BBs, and five strikeouts.  Offensively, the Catamounts took a while to dial in on the Patriots pitching, locking in their first run on the scoreboard in the 7th inning.  Eva Ochoa went 2-3 and returning All-American Alexa Shoemaker was 1-4 with an RBI.  Shaleigh Darlington and Heather Williams were both 1-3 on the day and Emily Horn came in to pinch hit in the 7th and went 1-1.  

The second game of the weekend put the Catamounts up against Herkimer CC with the Catamounts coming alive offensively and winning 14-7.  Chloe Greise got the win in seven innings, allowing five hits, 5 BBs, and 5 strikeouts.  Freshman Kameron Beck was 3-3 with 3 RBIs on a 3 run homer. Taylor Lamp and Alexa Shoemanker each had four RBIs.  The remaining RBIs came from Eva Ochoa as the Catamounts poured on the hits in the 2nd and 3rd innings and allowing the Catamounts to wrap up Saturday at 1-1 on their season. 

Sunday competition would bring on game three vs the Corning CC Red Barons who the Catamounts will face again in Keyser on March 17th. The Catamounts would win 13-4 in six innings.  Charity Wolfe would pitch all six innings allowing seven hits, with 3 BBs, and 4 strikeouts.  Freshman Taylor Lamp decided to end the game in style with a walk-off grand slam.  She was 2-3 on the day and drove in five RBIs on the day. Sophomore catcher Heather Williams also had a three run home run on the day.  Lamp, Horn, Kelly, Ochoa, and Shoemaker all added RBIs to the offensive attack by the Catamounts. 

The final game of the weekend had the Catamounts facing off against Lackawanna.  They earned the win in only five innings with a final score of 9-1.  Chloe Greise added another win to the weekend from the circle, only allowing one hit, 3 BBs, and an impressive nine strikeouts. Sophomore Emily Horn drove in two RBIs with a home run. Shoemaker and Megan Harris also hit over the fence with solo home runs. Taylor Lamp was another offensive weapon for the Catamounts, going 2-3 with 2 RBIs. 

The Catamounts wrap up the weekend 3-1 and start their season off similar to what they did in 2023.  The team returns home to Keyser and will face their first Region 20 opponent CCBC Catonsville at 11am and 1pm on March 2nd.
