Student-Athletes earn 3.0 average Fall term GPA

Keyser, WV

The 2023 Fall semester came to a close on December 15th and final grades were submitted on transcripts.  The Catamounts proved yet again that they take the definition of 'student-athlete' to heart, with 181 total athletes earning a 3.0+ average Fall term grade point average.  The highest women's team was Women's Cross Country with a 3.70 team Fall term grade point average, also earning them the highest spot among all athletic teams at WVU Potomac State.  The highest men's team was men's soccer, with a 3.20.

In total, five Catamount teams had a 3.0+ team grade point average, and an impressive 62% of student-athletes held individual 3.0+ terms.  15 of the Catamounts had perfect 4.0 terms which is 8% of the student-athlete population. With the WVU standards of the Dean's List being 3.5 of higher, and the President's List of 4.0 or higher, clearly a lot of Catamount student-athletes names will make those lists.

At the conclusion of the academic year, the NJCAA and Region 20 will award academic honors.  This past academic year, five teams received NJCAA Academic Honors for having over a 3.0 team grade point average in the academic year.  In addition to team honors, 38 individual student-athletes were named to NJCAA All-Academic teams. *

"The continual success that we see both in the classroom and in athletic competition shows that our coaches continue to recruit good student-athletes and they stress the importance of education.  The lessons student-athletes learn through balancing academics, athletics, and service are things that we hope will benefit them long after they graduate from this institution," stated Director of Athletics Mandi Larkin.  "I am incredibly proud of the hours these students and coaches put into being successful and have no doubt we will continue to lead the Region and the NJCAA with our academic success rates."

The Spring 2024 semester starts in the classroom on January 8th which also happens to be the start of competition in 2024 with a home men's basketball game at 7pm.

*Nine of the ten varsity teams at Potomac State are governed through the NJCAA and Region 20 and therefore are eligible for awards through those governing bodies.  Esports is not governed by the NJCAA and therefore is ineligible to receive academic honors.
