Catamount Crossing - Student-Athlete Spotlight - Austin Cross

The WVU Potomac State College Athletic Department has launched a new student-athlete spotlight, "Catamount Crossing." We will be celebrating student-athletes from different communities within our department. The focus for April is the Class of 2020.

Name: Austin Cross

Sport: Baseball

Hometown: Summit Point, WV

High School: Jefferson High School

Major: Business Administration

Favorite Class:

Sports Psychology

Favorite Professor:

Mr. Stone

Fun fact about me:

I wrestled for 7 years when I was younger.

Favorite PSC memory (athletic).

All the bus rides and over-night trips with the team and all those long days always ending at the closest Golden Corral for dinner.  Also, getting back on the mound for the first time in almost two years following surgery was easily my favorite personal memory.

What has playing at PSC meant to you:

Playing at Potomac State has meant a great deal to me. Coming into my first year at PSC, I didn't really know what to think because I only knew a couple of people at the school, and I wasn't familiar with the area, but my teammates did everything they could to make me feel welcome and a part of the team. Once you play for Potomac State you quickly realize how much you mean to the community throughout Keyser. People and students everywhere in the city come out to watch our games and support us. I can't thank Coach Little and Coach Schafer enough for allowing me the opportunity to represent Potomac State, on and off the field.

After PSC:

I will finish this Spring semester with my Associates degree in Business Administration. However, I will be changing my major this Fall, at my new university, to mathematics. Hopefully, I'll find a good school to pursue my career in baseball, as well. With that said, once my days competing in sports are finished, I want to either become a Sports Analyst or Sports Statistician.

I would like to thank:

All of the staff members at Potomac State for providing us with basic necessities like food and drinks, cleaning, teaching us in class, answering questions, and doing everything in their power to ensure our safety and success as students every day, to list a few. The cafeteria workers constantly interacted with us in a positive manner and created conversations to get to know us better. A couple of them even knew us by our first names'.

I'd also like to thank Coach Little and Coach Schafer for taking a chance on me two years ago shortly after I had undergone a surgery that carries a pretty bad reputation in the baseball world. They took my word regarding what I'm capable of achieving on a baseball field, when healthy, and offered me a spot on the team. Most coaches and schools probably wouldn't have given me this opportunity solely because of the injury I had. It's one of the main reasons I'll always be grateful for Potomac State Baseball and everyone that was involved in the process.
