Garrett rallies, then holds on to beat Potomac State

KEYSER, W.Va. — Garrett College scored five runs in the top of the ninth and then held on to defeat host WVU Potomac State College 10-9 Wednesday afternoon at Golden Park.

The Lakers, who trailed 4-2 after six innings and 4-3 through seven, took a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth on Quintin Smith's two-run home run.

The Catamounts, who finished with eight hits, tied it in the bottom of the inning when Zack Whitacre scored on Connor Kelly's bases- loaded walk.

Peyton Carr's bases-loaded walk in the top of the ninth scored Brandon Lucas and gave the Lakers a 6-5 lead and started their 5-run inning. Nathan Darwin was hit by a pitch, scoring Juan Pinero before Tanner George belted a two-run base hit. Smith then reached on a fielder's choice that scored Darwin putting the Lakers up 10-5.

The Catamounts, however, fought back. Graham Brown belted a two-run home run and Trevor Thomas and Josh Hoffman each had RBI walks before Garrett got the final out for the 10-9 victory.

The Lakers (4-2) finished with 11 hits. led by Lucas who had three with two runs scored and two RBIs. Tim Hanible, Cameron Douglas and Smith each had two hits with Smith driving in three runs.

WVU Potomac State (2-6) had three players with two hits each. Brown, Whitacre and Devon Neal, who belted a three-run home run in the sixth inning.

Garrett's Skylar Kanacsky started and pitched seven innings, striking out three without any walks and allowing six hits and four earned runs. Colby Johnson was the fifth of six relievers and he got the win while Lucas picked up the save.

The Catamounts' Tyler Bradford started and worked five innings with four strikeouts and four walks. Reliever Avery Heiple ended up with the loss.

Potomac State will host St. ClairCounty Community College in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
