Kelly, Stotler power Frostburg State in Jim Crawley Classic

MCHENRY — Tyesha Taylor scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Bethany Arndt scored seven of her eight points in the fourth quarter to rally Potomac State to a 59-48 victory over Penn State Fayette in the David K. Martin Classic Saturday evening.

Potomac State (6-1) trailed by two (11-9, 28-26, 42-40) at the end of the first three quarters before Arndt helped jumpstart the Catamount offense in the fourth.

Johnee Durham finished with 13 points and Haley Butcher 11 for Potomac State. Five of Butcher’s points came in the fourth quarter, helping the Cats outscored the Nittany Lions 19-6.

Dae-lin Burnsworth had 15 points for Penn State Fayette (1-3).

Potomac State will be idle until playing at Cecil on Dec. 1 at 1 p.m.

Frostburg State 67City Coll. of N.Y. 44

FROSTBURG — Megan Kelly led a balanced attack with 13 points and Sydney Stotler had nine points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots, powering Frostburg State past City College of New York in the opening game of the Jim Crawley Classic at Bobcat Arena.

The win, in FSU’s home opener, makes the Bobcats 2-0. They will play Mount Aloysius today at 3 p.m. City College (1-1) will play Christopher Newport at 1 p.m.

Kelly also collected five steals for the Bobcats, who led 32-20 at the break and outscored the Beavers 35-24 in the second half.

Victoria Diggs added 10 points, Amanda Emory had nine for the Bobcats.

Debra Chan had nine points and five assists for City College.

Northern Virginia 77Allegany 53

CUMBRELAND — Natasha Porter and Mia Buchanon had double-doubles, teaming for 36 points and 31 rebounds and powering Northern Virginia past Allegany.

Porter had 20 points and 11 rebounds while Buchanon scored 16 points and hauled in 20 rebounds for Northern Virginia (1-4), which had 58 rebounds, including 28 on the offensive end.

Jonae Bean had a game-high 30 points, six steals and five rebounds for Allegany (1-4). Lenna Shank had 11 points and Daejiah Dayton eight points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Allegany hosts Niagara County today.

On Saturday afternoon the Frostburg women’s basketball team opened its home slate with the Jim Crawley Classic and a 67-44 win against City College of New York.

The Bobcats move to 2-0 on their season while the Beavers fall to 1-1.

Bobcat junior Victoria Diggs opened the game with a three pointer at 9:24 with an assist by junior Victoria Yoder.

Shortly after, senior Megan Kelly connected on a three pointer with an assist by Diggs. To continue propelling the Bobcats, Yoder managed to steal the ball from the Beavers to then handoff to Diggs for a fast break in the paint to put the Bobcats ahead 8-0.

Kelly started the second quarter with another triple to give the Bobcats a 21-10 cushion. Sophomore Kayla Wilson connected on both of her free throws to increase the lead 23-13.

The first half ended with two good free throws from junior Amanda Emory giving the Bobcats a 32-12 lead.

Diggs and Kelly led the way in the first half for the Bobcats as they each registered 10 points. Not far behind was Emory as she collected seven points.

In the second half of play, the Bobcats kept pushing forward with a constant lead over the Beavers.

Junior Sydney Stotler made her way onto the scene leading the way for the second half with nine points. She made five of six free throws for the half, three of which came in the opening two minutes of the second half.

Wilson was six of eight on free throws for the night collecting six points.

Frostburg dominated three point and free throw percentages at 42.1% and 70.0%.

Senior Megan Kelly led the way for the night with a total of 13 points.

The Bobcats return to action tomorrow Sunday, at 3 p.m., against Mount Aloysius.
