Cats beat Northern Virginia; Garrett wins by 5

KEYSER, W.Va. — Cortney Walton nailed six three-point goals and scored 22 points, and Breland Walton had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Potomac State remained undefeated by overpowering Northern Virginia 95-76 in junior college men’s basketball Saturday afternoon.

Cortney Walton shot 8 for 14 from the field, including 6 for 11 from three-point line. Breland Walton shot 6 for 9 from the field for coach Shawn White’s Catamounts (5-0), who led 47-28 at halftime.

James Moore added 13 points and two steals, Ramone Williams had 10 points in the first half and finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Leondre Rogers had nine points and three steals.

 

Joe Davis led Northern Virginia (1-3) with 19 points.

The Catamounts hosts Southern Maryland today at 2 p.m.

Garrett 75Penn Highlands 70

MCHENRY — Zakeem Davis poured in 27 points and also had team highs with 14 rebounds, five steals and three assists, leading Garrett College to a 75-70 victory over Penn Highlands in the final game of the McDonald’s Tipoff Classic at Garrett.

Davis, a 6-3 sophomore guard, hit eight field goals and 10 of 15 free throws for the Lakers (3-1). Elisha Kidd added 18 points and Kai Thompson had six points and three assists.

 

Jordan Fortson led Penn Highlands with 26 points and Peyton Brown added 21.

Garrett led 37-33 at halftime and extended the lead to a dozen points several times in the second half but was unable to put Penn Highlands away, and it was a seven- to nine-point game late in the game, thanks to Davis, who hit two buckets and 6 of 8 free throws down the stretch.

Penn Highlands (0-2) hit its eighth three-pointer at the end to make it a five-point final. Two former area high school standouts play for Penn Highlands, Tayden Jessie (Bishop Walsh) and Landon Ridgeway (Paw Paw).

Garrett, which beat CCAC-Allegheny 75-54 Friday night, hosts Southern Maryland in a Tuesday doubleheader. The women play at 5 p.m. and the men at 7.
