Lucas Taylor, dean of Student Experience at West Virginia University Potomac State College, is pleased to announce the hiring of Garett Sherman as the College’s new athletic director.

“Garett will be leading Potomac State athletics into an exciting future as we continue to grow and build on the tradition of success we’ve experienced in previous years,” Taylor said.

Sherman arrives at PSC after serving as Athletic Director at the University of Maine at Fort Kent. At UMFK, a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics institution, he provided direction for the college’s eight varsity sports, managed the athletic facilities and oversaw the department’s fundraising efforts.

A native of Cumberland, Md., Sherman began his collegiate athletic career in 2006 when he was named an assistant men’s basketball coach on the NJCAA level at Allegany College of Maryland. In 2008, he was named the head women’s basketball coach at ACM and quickly revitalized the program earning MD JUCO, Region XX and District J Basketball Coach of the Year honors in 2009 and again in 2011. While at ACM, Sherman also held the roles of physical education instructor and assistant facilities supervisor.

In 2012 Sherman accepted the position of head women’s basketball coach at Gordon State College, an NJCAA institution in Barnesville, Ga., along with the challenge of building their program from scratch. After his program and others were dropped due to budget cuts, Sherman spent a year as the assistant men’s basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Gordon State. The following season, 2013, he was promoted to head coach of the men’s basketball team.

Sherman returned to women’s basketball in 2014 when he was named head women’s basketball coach and director of Games Management at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs, Wyo. He led the program from the bottom of the region standings to a championship season during his third year, culminating with him being named the NJCAA Region IX Coach of the Year.

In 2017 Sherman was named assistant women’s basketball coach at NCAA Division I University of Maine.  For the 2017-18 season, he helped lead the Black Bears to the American East Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championships and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Sherman has defined clear goals for the direction of Potomac State Athletics. “We want to help our athletes develop into responsible citizens who are involved in their communities, who excel academically and who relentlessly pursue championships in their desired sports.”

Sherman received his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education in 2003 and his Master of Education, Administration and Supervision degree in 2005, both from Frostburg State University.

Sherman, his wife, Ayoola, and their children Trey, Cameron and Iyla, have set up residence in Keyser.
