Catamounts drop opening series at Sumter

Sumter, SC- Potomac State’s season did not open well as the Catamounts dropped all four games of their series with USC Sumter.

PSC was out hit 34-25 and performed poorly on defense as the Catamounts made eleevne errors in the series.

In game one, PSC starter Ben McDougal lasted just 2 1/3 innings as the Fire Ants scored runs in bunches en route to a 21-9 win.  Isreal May drove in five runs for Sumter while Seth Kirby drove in three.

Nik Rubendall and Maddox Brooks led the Catamounts with three hits apiece.

In game two, PSC trailed just 2-1 in the fifth inning before Sumter scores five runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 7-1 win.

Dylan Bell went four innings in his first collegiate start striking out four and allowing just two runs.

Sumter starter Josh Keen struck out nine in five innings of work to improve to 3-1.

Reilly Bubb led the Catamounts at the plate with a pair of singles.

In game three, with no score in the fifth, a two out error allowed two Fire Ants runs to score to make it 2-0.  Potomac State rallied for a run in the seventh on an RBI single from Rubendall, but the rally fell short with the tying run at second and ended 2-1.

Cooper Polcovich was impressive in his first start.  The freshman allowed just three hits in five innings of work, striking out two.

Jace Martin struck out nine in six innings of work for Sumter picking up his first win of the season.

In the finale, defense was again the Achillies hill for PSC as the Catamounts committed four errors as Sumter cruised to a 5-2 win.

Grayson Peel worked four innings of relief for USC Sumter striking out nine to pick up the win.

Potomac State will be right back in action this weekend with another southern swing.  This time PSC will face off with Lenoir Community College in Kinston, NC for a pair of doubleheaders.  Saturday’s first pitch is scheduled for noon.
