Webb, Schaeffer pitch Potomac State past Hagerstown 11-3

Keyser, WV- Potomac State received strong pitching and used timely hitting to cruise past Hagerstown Community College 11-8 on a chilly Sunday afternoon at Golden Park.

Colt Webb went six innings, striking out ten to improve his record to 5-1 on the season.

“Colt gave us a great effort, especially considering the cool temperatures and high winds today,” said PSC Head Coach Doug Little.  “He was his usual self, he pitched ahead in the count and was good at finishing off hitters today.”

Brandon Schaeffer worked the final three innings to pick up his second save in 2019.  The freshman struck out eight of the eleven hitters he faced and allowed just a single hit.

“Brandon was sharp today,” said Little.  “He had all of his pitches working today and pitched with good pace and purpose.” 

Potomac State jumped out to a quick first inning lead when Austin Martin walked to lead off the game.  He quickly came around to score when freshman Hayden Almond tripled to deep left-centerfield.  Two hitters later Almond scored when fellow freshman Dale Houser singled up the middle to make the score 2-0.

“Getting the lead early was crucial for us today,” said Little.  “I knew the weather would be a factor today and

PSC added a four-spot in the second inning highlighted by Martin’s bases loaded double that scored two runs. 

The Catamounts added a single run in each of the next two innings on a sacrifice fly from Almond in the third inning and an RBI bloop single from Andrew Berry in the fourth.

Josh Mendes got Hagerstown Community College (21-8) on the board with an RBI single in the top of the fourth.

The two teams both exchanged a two-run inning in the fifth.  The Hawks put together four straight hits with one out to score a pair on RBI singles from Robbie Houck and Nate Cotton to cut the PSC lead to 8-3.

The Catamounts answered right back when Joel Spishock laced a two-run single to increase the lead to 10-3.

Austin Chavis hit a solo homerun in the seventh to close out the scoring for Potomac State.

“Our hitters really battled against some good arms today,” said Little.  “I think it was a combination of our guys having some good at-bats and catching Hagerstown on an off day.  They are a solid team, already have 21 wins and are always tough to beat.”

Potomac State is now 16-5 and will continue their homestand when they play host to the on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at Golden Park.
